The LIVE RECORD will be recorded on New Year's Day (1/1/10), and 1/2/10, at the club where we got our start, the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA. Tickets are still available, but it's a very small venue, so we urge you to get them now (last minute Christmas gift anyone?) We will be recording a full length album, culled from the performances over these two days. Wouldn't it be great to say you were then when?
You can buy tickets here for the January 1 & 2 shows.

Sarah's Got Soul - New Haven Advocate
Great article by By James Velvet
"They play guitars (Sarah Borges and Lyle Brewer), bass (Binky), and drums (Rob Dulaney), and, as noted, they rock like crazy.
Sarah sings. And that's the key.
Among the many things that make for a good singer, personality is tops. Tone, pitch, phrasing, all the "musical" values come into play, but every one of them is colored by the temperament and emotional makeup of the singer. When it all works out right, it's called soul.
And Sarah's got it."

SBBS "Americana Act of the Year" BMA 2009
December 2, 2009, Boston, MA - Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles took home the award for 'Americana Act of the Year' at last night's 2009 Boston Music Awards.
The Boston Music Awards took place at the spectacular Liberty Hotel in Boston, MA. Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles were up against some tough competition in the Americana category, prevailing over mandolin master Jimmy Ryan and Hayride and local godfather of the roots scene, Dennis Brennan, as well as newcomers Girls, Guns and Glory. Their road-weary persistence, amazing talent and overall hard work brought them to the forefront of a category bursting with seasoned veterans and exceptional musicians.
“This year’s roster of nominees is one of the most talented and diverse groups of musicians the BMAs has honored in its history,” said Chip Rives, Executive Director of The Boston Music Awards, “that reflects just how vibrant the music scene is in the area.

The Producer of the Year award was won by the production team of Paul Q. Kolderie and Adam Taylor, producers of all three releases by Sarah Borges.
In addition to the BMA's, Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles were nominated in 2009 by the Americana Music Association for an Americana Music Award in the 'New and Emerging Artist' category. They were also invited to perform their hit, "Me and Your Ghost," at the historical Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN as part of the Americana awards ceremony.

"On The Stars Are Out, Borges and the Broken Singles bristle with the prickly power of Crazy Horse, the ass-motivation quotient of The Kinks, the revved-up honky tonk head snap of X, the twangy, soulful Pop ache of Big Star and the crotch-kicking swagger of The Stones. Hold onto your wigs and keys: The Broken Singles have come for your central nervous system."

SBBS Makes People Do Things ...
Getting hotter
With AMA nomination, Borges’ career about to hit boiling point
By KEN BRADFORD
South Bend Tribune Staff Writer
"If you’ve seen her play, it’s hard to imagine anything freaking Borges out.
Onstage, she’s in total command. She has the look, the wit, the style.
It’s absolute charisma. If she points to you, you might find yourself onstage with her leading a singalong. You just do it. People too timid to dance are on their feet. They sing loudly words they just learned a minute ago.
At her shows, Borges makes people do things they had no intention to do."

"Backed by her longtime band The Broken Singles, she often tries to take things to a different direction—at this year’s SXSW, she reportedly closed her performance at Austin’s Continental Club by singing Bob Dylan’s “Outlaw Blues” while standing on a barstool (can you picture Sheryl Crow pulling that kind of stunt?). Let’s just hope she ends the current tour with no more than a few bruises."

"Up and Dancing Early in Lincoln"
You're Missing It: Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles
by L. Kent Wolgamott
A fine roots rock outfit, the quartet has rolled through a hard country Charlie Pride cover, some J Geils blues, a twangy instrumental and a bunch of highly melodic pop/rock numbers that have the backbeat of real rock 'n' roll.
Borges is a powerful singer whose voice adapts to each of the styles, sounding fully at home in each. She is also a fine entertainer although it has been hard to hear much of her between songs banter because of audience chatter and the fact that she sings so loud, which likely leads to a turned down mic.
But that's a little quibble about an excellent show that had them up and dancing early -- which was the point of rock 'n' roll before it got turned into "art".

Limelight Magazine: SB -The transition from alt country to pop rock
By GEORGE AUSTIN
If you knew the music of Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles before, you would think of alt country and Americana. But that is not what her latest album sounds like. Borges and her band have gone toward a more pop rock genre.
"This new record has a lot less country," Borges said. "There’s a lot less pedals and steel guitar. It sounds like our band and it definitely sounds like us, but there’s no pedal or steel. Even taking that away lends a different sound to it."
Borges said the band decided to go a different direction on the album, called "The Stars Are Out," because when she and the Broken Singles toured, they saw what worked well. Their performances are very energetic and they wanted to reflect that on the CD. And so far, it seems that trying to translate the live show to the recording has worked. Borges said the album has done really well and the band is playing a lot of shows behind it.
The song "Do It For Free" has gotten radio play. Borges wrote about creepy men in bars.
"There’s so many men songs written about women, so I decided to turn it around a little bit," Borges said.Read the Rest

At long last rock
Rich Albertoni
06/05/2009
"When Sarah Borges moved to Boston in 1995 to attend Emerson College, an early wave of indie rock defined the local music scene. The success of bands like Throwing Muses and Buffalo Tom influenced Borges' drive to perform, even if they didn't influence her musical style.
Since releasing her debut album in 2005, Borges, 31, has written a lot of songs high on country twang. That changed earlier this year. In March, Borges released The Stars Are Out, her third album and the first to fully embrace rock 'n' roll."

SBBS - Building Something Memorable in NC
Consequence of Sound at Femme Fest ‘09 (5/30)
By Jessica Dean and Luke Johnson
6/1/2009
"Drifting down North Davidson Street to the outdoor stage brought the welcomed surprise of the day, Sara Borges and The Broken Singles. The band hails from Boston, but Borges’ tongue gave her away to be from the Midwest originally. Borges and co. play a dirty alt. rock with heavy tremolo and reverb, a sound bound with grit from the Tex-Mex plane: sun’s up, ice tea and beers are out. A tall woman, Borges towered over her band mates in boots and a black skirt, bearing a striking resemblance to Betty Page. Borges and the bassist, Binky - that’s what he goes by - chatted easily with the crowd, building a connection with the audience. Stage presence at any festival is key. It’s what separates the good from the memorable. Borges and The Broken Singles built something memorable."

"Metaphorically speaking, Sarah Borges has traded in her cowboy boots for rockin' shoes. Her new album, “The Stars Are Out” (Sugar Hill Records), starts out with a blast of Joan Jett-styled rock belligerence and proceeds from there with much rock, not much country – in marked contrast to her first two albums, which were grounded in honky-tonk twang."
"Literally speaking, however, Borges just can't bear to tamper with a wardrobe routine that has worked well for years. So even though she's in more of a rock frame of mind nowadays, she'll still have her trusty cowboy boots on when she plays Charlotte FemmeFest at Evening Muse on Saturday."
“I'm really superstitious about what I wear when I play, which has been a problem in the past,” she says, calling from Seattle. “You just can't wash things as much as you'd like on tour, for one thing. But I'm still wearing the boots. I never wore them to try and be ‘The Alt-Country Lady,' they're just what I normally wear.…

"8:08 p.m.: Here's an awesome thing that just happened."
"Sarah Borges was wrapping up her set in the Bandshell. It was drizzling, but her audience had slowly built back up during the course of her rip-roaring blues-rock set. And in the middle of her final song, she decided the audience wasn't quite as into it as she felt they ought to be."
"So Borges hopped offstage (sans mic), ran through the crowd, grabbed a vinyl chair and climbed on. She implored the audience to join her in a rain-soaked, unplugged call-and-response."
"Turn your lights down low!" Borges called.
"TURN YOUR LIGHTS DOWN LOW!"
"Open up your back door!"
"OPEN UP YOUR BACK DOOR!"
She pulled a fan's fuzzy purple hat off his head and did it all again.
"Turn your lights down low!"
"TURN YOUR LIGHTS DOWN LOW!"
"Open up your back door!"
"OPEN UP YOUR BACK DOOR!
"Then she ran back onstage and finished her set. Great stuff. This is the kind of moment that you hear about whenever people reminisce fondly of Heatwave."

Review: Stars are Out - "every tune is immediately lovable"

Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles - The Stars Are Out (2009)
"Rocking somewhere between new wave and alt-country, Sarah Borges continues to knock out some of the most rockin' CDs you're gonna hear these days. She would have been all over rock radio back in the day. There isn't a bad song on this CD and every tune is immediately lovable. This will be high up on my year end list."

Old-Fashioned Cover Band Shoots For The 'Stars'
By Ken Tucker

"Fresh Air from WHYY, May 21, 2009 - Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles are a Boston-area quartet raised on punk rock and country music. Their new album The Stars Are Out contains five original songs and five covers from artists ranging from The Lemonheads to NRBQ.
To make sure you don't think the title is a pun, the album features a picture of a glittering night sky, because Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles are certainly not stars. The group's primary charm, which is communicated very well on this album, is that it's a very good live act, an old-fashioned bar band playing a mixture of original material and covers of others' hits.
What lifts The Stars Are Out above the work of most bar bands is that Borges and her cohorts are able to put their own mark on the material they didn't write, such as their nicely moody version of a Stephen Merritt/Magnetic Fields song, "No One Will Ever Love You."
Borges and the three guys who form the Broken Singles build their own material not just around Borges' voice, which can cut across the guitars like a knife, but also around their shared fondness for pop music history. Take, for example, "Me and Your Ghost," in which Borges does some channeling of Lesley Gore circa "It's My Party," girl-group harmonies, and Mersey-beat rhythms. It's a 60s throwback that's refreshingly free of camp or irony.
The question here is whether good taste in pop music history and deft skill at reproducing a wide range of styles can cohere as something original. In this, I'm not entirely convinced. Certainly, the group's energetic eclecticism comes to them naturally. But then, originality can be overrated. Sometimes coming up with a great set-list for your live act — which is basically what The Stars Are Out amounts to as a collection of songs — is its own reward.
Listen to Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles and you want to get out of your house or apartment and hear some good live music. In this, the band is a fine motivator, a reminder of how much fun music can be, making it and hearing it being played by people for whom it means absolutely everything — a feeling they just want to share."
