Fitzgerald’s Show Preview
Newcity Music
Ernest Barteldes
"Backed by her longtime band The Broken Singles, she often tries to take things to a different direction—at this year’s SXSW, she reportedly closed her performance at Austin’s Continental Club by singing Bob Dylan’s “Outlaw Blues” while standing on a barstool (can you picture Sheryl Crow pulling that kind of stunt?). Let’s just hope she ends the current tour with no more than a few bruises."

Review: Seattle Show at The Sunset Tavern
Review by: Seattle Show Gal
"Let’s play a game; I’ll ask you a question and you answer out loud. Ok here we go. What kind of music do you like?"
"(You answer now…)"
"How many of you had a long list that ended with, “well, pretty much everything but country?” Don’t be ashamed, I am one of those people too! However, when I saw Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles I sang to a different tune. This show was the perfect example of how great shows can cross genre lines"

"Up and Dancing Early in Lincoln"
You're Missing It: Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles
by L. Kent Wolgamott
A fine roots rock outfit, the quartet has rolled through a hard country Charlie Pride cover, some J Geils blues, a twangy instrumental and a bunch of highly melodic pop/rock numbers that have the backbeat of real rock 'n' roll.
Borges is a powerful singer whose voice adapts to each of the styles, sounding fully at home in each. She is also a fine entertainer although it has been hard to hear much of her between songs banter because of audience chatter and the fact that she sings so loud, which likely leads to a turned down mic.
But that's a little quibble about an excellent show that had them up and dancing early -- which was the point of rock 'n' roll before it got turned into "art".

Limelight Magazine: SB -The transition from alt country to pop rock
By GEORGE AUSTIN
If you knew the music of Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles before, you would think of alt country and Americana. But that is not what her latest album sounds like. Borges and her band have gone toward a more pop rock genre.
"This new record has a lot less country," Borges said. "There’s a lot less pedals and steel guitar. It sounds like our band and it definitely sounds like us, but there’s no pedal or steel. Even taking that away lends a different sound to it."
Borges said the band decided to go a different direction on the album, called "The Stars Are Out," because when she and the Broken Singles toured, they saw what worked well. Their performances are very energetic and they wanted to reflect that on the CD. And so far, it seems that trying to translate the live show to the recording has worked. Borges said the album has done really well and the band is playing a lot of shows behind it.
The song "Do It For Free" has gotten radio play. Borges wrote about creepy men in bars.
"There’s so many men songs written about women, so I decided to turn it around a little bit," Borges said.Read the Rest

At long last rock
Rich Albertoni
06/05/2009
"When Sarah Borges moved to Boston in 1995 to attend Emerson College, an early wave of indie rock defined the local music scene. The success of bands like Throwing Muses and Buffalo Tom influenced Borges' drive to perform, even if they didn't influence her musical style.
Since releasing her debut album in 2005, Borges, 31, has written a lot of songs high on country twang. That changed earlier this year. In March, Borges released The Stars Are Out, her third album and the first to fully embrace rock 'n' roll."

SBBS Podcast from the Van

"hear a podcast with Borges, who spoke with us from her band van as they left a truck stop outside Austin, Texas, and headed toward Nashville, Tenn. We play songs from the new disc, talk about them, and Borges dispenses some invaluable information to broke people looking to save money at the laundromat."

SBBS - Building Something Memorable in NC
Consequence of Sound at Femme Fest ‘09 (5/30)
By Jessica Dean and Luke Johnson
6/1/2009
"Drifting down North Davidson Street to the outdoor stage brought the welcomed surprise of the day, Sara Borges and The Broken Singles. The band hails from Boston, but Borges’ tongue gave her away to be from the Midwest originally. Borges and co. play a dirty alt. rock with heavy tremolo and reverb, a sound bound with grit from the Tex-Mex plane: sun’s up, ice tea and beers are out. A tall woman, Borges towered over her band mates in boots and a black skirt, bearing a striking resemblance to Betty Page. Borges and the bassist, Binky - that’s what he goes by - chatted easily with the crowd, building a connection with the audience. Stage presence at any festival is key. It’s what separates the good from the memorable. Borges and The Broken Singles built something memorable."
